Peterborough City Hospital exhibition a ‘tribute to staff’ Posted On 14 May 2021

Heritage team set to start work on Chris Porsz photo installation

The installation of a major photography exhibition at Peterborough City Hospital will go ahead soon after it was shelved for more than a year.

Initial plans for the exhibition – by local photographer Chris Porsz – were first discussed in March last year a few months after the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust (NWAFT) received a grant of £58,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support a number of activities across the Trust.

However, the pandemic mothballed the plans, which also included proper archiving of historical items such as a 100-year-old diabetic testing kit, early anaesthetic apparatus and a letter from Sir Winston Churchill.

But now the pressure on the hospital is easing, it has been announced the photography exhibition will go ahead.

Chris, whose pictures portraying life in Peterborough’s hospitals have been published in a book entitled Just Be Kind, told Peterborough Matters: “I’m delighted by the news. We started talking about it about a year ago, but the pandemic halted discussions. Then it seemed best to wait until the book was out so that the team could pick the pictures they wanted from there.

“But I think the installation will be such a great tribute to the staff. So many have such fond memories of Peterborough District Hospital and I’m just glad I could be there to capture those moments in time.”

Taff Gidi, the heritage lead at NWAFT, confirmed: “As soon as we are able, the exhibition at Peterborough City Hospital will be installed. We have understandably paused all other elements of the project in consultation with the National Lottery Heritage Fund and we will re-evaluate what we can still deliver once we are out of the pandemic.”

Other plans include the creation of a stained-glass window, as well as events, community talks and theatre performances to highlight the Trust’s heritage.
